About Us

A Love Fueled by Adventure

Engagement in Machu PicchuWe’ve always been passionate about traveling. On our very first date we traded tales from our journeys. Cruising through Greek islands, backpacking through Brazil, wandering the streets of Paris, and partying on the beaches of Thailand. The more harrowing the adventure the more enamored with each other we grew. Four years and thousands of frequent flier miles later we got engaged at the summit of Huayna Picchu mountain, in Machu Picchu.

As a young couple, most expected us to buckle down at our jobs, start picking baby names, and save up for a house. However, as a childfree couple, we found happiness drinking in dive bars with strangers, eating bizarre new foods, and dancing barefoot on the beach. So in 2019 we launched the Serious Travel Couple blog and started planning our dream, a long term honeymoon around the world. But then, a pandemic happened… Well, we’ll write about our previous adventures and hope we can go out there very soon!

Ryan

Dunes adventures in HuacachinaGrowing up in Washington D.C., I never really understood why people travel. Why get on an uncomfortable plane for hours when marble monuments, free museums, and enormous parks were only a half-an-hour metro ride away? I had gone to Atlanta for college, and vacationed outside the country a handful of times with my parents, but I never really wondered what else was out there until the recession of 2007 hit.

Just months before the unemployment rate peaked at 10.0%, I graduated from Morehouse College with an English degree, a load of debt, and very few career prospects. When one of my friends suggested teaching English overseas, I jumped at the opportunity and found myself in Seoul, South Korea. I had such a great time I signed up for another year, explored a little bit of Asia, then scheduled a month off between semesters to backpack through Brazil. When I came back stateside in 2013 I was planning my next adventure when it found me in the form of a message from a gorgeous Puerto Rican on an online dating app.

Sunset at Huacachina Desert

I always knew I wanted to explore the world. I’ve always craved new and exciting experiences. Experiences that helped me grow and understand myself and the world a little bit better. Finding someone to share this passion with was important to me. I wouldn’t settle until I found a partner with whom I can both fall in love and travel the world!

When my dad, and best friend, suddenly passed in 2017 I had a deep realization: Life is now.  I must do the things that set my soul on fire because time is limited. Traveling, discovering new things, connecting with people, and sharing those experiences makes me feel alive. That’s what I want to do with this life: experience and connect as much as I can. As much as I have the opportunity to while I’m alive.

As soon as I saw Ryan’s online dating profile I knew he would be the type of person who would be down for an adventure. When he proposed to me in 2018 he engraved his promise on the ring: Aventuras Siempre (Adventures Forever). I knew he was the one!

Why Serious Couple?

These days we’re not-so-serious about most things except traveling, especially after a pandemic. Staying inside for a whole year (and counting), and not being able to travel, convinced us even more that if we wanted to travel the world we got to really go for it.  Life is short and we aren’t getting any younger. We want to make this dream a reality, so yeah, we’re serious!
